Instrumentation of a 250tn KONECRANES' crane in Newcastle

The 250tn crane in Newcastle upon Tyne has been designed and erected in 1936. The structure is currently (summer 2012) under retrospective. The structural monitoring report is considered to contribute in the structural assessment of the vast structure.

The crane consists of a double cantilever, with the rear shorter part carrying the ballast. The boom consists of a twin frame approximately 60m long.

The aim of the structural monitoring is to detect the strains at critical positions and compare them to the theoretical values, as deduced from a linear elastic structural model.

The CRD Group also developed a monitoring software, to cover the needs of both real time monitoring and data post-processing.
